A New Friend / Inspiration
I use to sell Wildtree and became Facebook friends with another representative. I notice one day on Facebook that Jacklyn was posting about Autism, so I did some Face Book stalking 😊. Come to find out her son has Autism. I’m dying to talk more about Autism with her; but I’m nervous. She goes through this everyday just like I do; and that’s what I need in my life right now. I so desperately need/want to talk with someone who experiences this everyday like I do. Finally, I reach out and… bam! Just like that we’re talking Autism and our kids. Turns out we’re very similar people; and our kids are around the same level on the spectrum. Why does she have to be in KC though! I was talking with her about using a device for speech, and she tells me it has worked wonders for her son. Okay another success story. I’ll hope for the best.
Jaclyn tells me she reads a children’s book to her son’s class every year about a child with Autism. This helps his classmates understand that he’s Autistic. It also helps them to understand that he has a different way of communicating with everyone. She’s also been a big part in my inspiration to do more in terms of spreading awareness and acceptance. She’s been fundraising for adult changing tables in stores. This led her to partner with VarietyKC and HyVee Corporate in trying to raise money for adult changing tables in their local Hy-Vee store. How great! I never really thought about it until then just how hard it’s getting to change Payton in public. She’s starting to not fit on changing tables. I never thought about if potty training doesn’t work out how hard it’ll be to change a diaper in public places.
